Program Objective:
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education is at the forefront of global educational priorities, enhancing students’ problem-solving and analytical thinking skills. This program aims to equip teachers with the skills to design and implement AI-supported STEM lesson plans based on the Engineering Design Process.
Conducted jointly by Istanbul Aydın University STEM Education Application and Research Center and the Continuous Education Center, the program emphasizes a sustainable and practical pedagogical model, turning simple and recyclable materials into creative engineering solutions rather than relying on expensive technologies. Participants will learn to use AI as a research and design assistant, gaining theoretical knowledge online and then hands-on experience in the IAÜ STEM Laboratory.
Program Structure and Duration:
This hybrid program combines theory and practice:
• 10 Hours Online (Synchronous) Training:
o Introduction to STEM and AI Integration
o Engineering Design Process Theory
o AI Tools for the Design Process
• 30 Hours In-Person Application:
o Intensive workshops in the IAÜ STEM Laboratory
o Participants will plan as teachers and design/create as students

Program Content:
PART 1: ONLINE THEORETICAL TRAINING (10 HOURS)
• STEM Education and AI Integration: Foundations of STEM and its evolution with AI
• Engineering Design Process: Detailed analysis of defining problems, researching, imagining, planning, creating, and improving solutions
• Designing STEM Lesson Plans with AI: Creating effective STEM lessons with AI assistance
• Assessment in STEM Education: Process-based evaluation tools and AI-assisted rubric creation
PART 2: IN-PERSON APPLICATION AT IAÜ STEM LAB (30 HOURS)
• Workshop 1: Innovation and Idea Development: Creative problem-solving and sketching ideas with AI support
• Workshop 2: Engineering Design Workshops: Prototyping using simple materials
• Workshop 3: AI-Supported STEM Lesson Plan Design: Participants design achievement-oriented lesson plans suitable for their subject areas
• Workshop 4: Micro-Teaching & Peer Review: Simulation of lesson plans and prototypes in the lab, followed by evaluation
• Workshop 5: Process Evaluation Practice: Ensuring projects align with the Engineering Design Process and providing AI-assisted feedback

About the Instructor:
Prof. Dr. Devrim Akgündüz is a pioneer in STEM education in Turkey, having trained over 600 certified STEM teachers, conducted workshops for thousands of teachers, and delivered STEM education to students from preschool to university. He has established Turkey’s first STEM laboratory, STEM Teacher Certificate Program, and STEM School transformation programs. Prof. Dr. Akgündüz has extensive international experience, including collaborations with the U.S. State Department, TÜBİTAK, UNESCO, TÜSİAD, and the EU.
